梅.威斯特（1893-1980）是上個世紀30年代美國著名的女演員、歌手和劇作家。她是好萊塢第一個性感女明星，以提倡性解放而著稱，曾因為猥褻罪被判入獄十天。她也是美國第一個有關變性人的劇本的作者，同性戀角色第一次登上美國戲劇舞台也是在她的作品裡。毫不誇張地說，她就是30年代的麥當娜。她的許多話，今天看來依然有點驚世駭俗。
本片上映半年後美國國家道德審查會就成立了，根據官方的說法，梅.威斯特和她的這部電影是該組織成立的主要原因之一。

按照原始劇本，勞倫.巴考的戲份並不多，女主角其實應該是扮演自由法國組織成員的Dolores Moran。藉助與亨弗萊.鮑嘉的戀情，劇組增加了勞倫.巴考的戲份，把她提升為女主角。Moran與本片導演霍華德.霍克之間也有緋聞，從第一女主角降格為女配角對她來說這真是件很郁悶的事。不過如果按照原著進行拍攝的話，劇情與卡薩布蘭卡就太過雷同了。本片的兩位編劇（歐內斯特.海明威和威廉.福克納）都是諾貝爾文學獎獲得者，導演在拍攝時居然對劇本大肆竄改，不知兩人作何感想。
