劇情介紹：
少年海因切一面唱著心愛的歌，一面到各個商店采購日常用品。原來，他的母親早故，現在他和父親卡爾一起生活。他是這個家庭的小當家。海因切預備好了早飯，把賴著不肯起床的卡爾拖了起來，讓他及時早餐後去上班。卡爾非常樂意接受兒子的「管教」。
海因切的母親，是大實業家威廉·伯特霍德的女兒，而卡爾當時僅是他公司里的一名普通職員。因此，伯特霍德不同意這門婚事。自從女兒和卡爾結婚以後，他就跟他們斷絕了來往。女兒死後，他更加遷怒於卡爾。不管卡爾到哪兒工作，他總是說卡爾的壞話，使他得不到提升，以致卡爾不得不下決心離開德國，去加拿大謀生。沒想到正當卡爾接到從加拿大寄來的聘書的那天，卡爾所在的恩格哈銀行突然丟失了十二萬馬克，又查出這筆款已寄到加拿大去了。這樣卡爾就理所當然地成了懷疑對象，以致被警察局關進了監獄。
海因切正在家裡為父親准備祝賀生日，他聽到了敲門聲，以為是父親回來了。開門一看卻是來報信的鄰居。海因切堅信父親是冤枉的，他立刻趕去監獄探望，並決心救出父親。海因切找到年輕的女律師雷娜特，請她為卡爾辯護。可是，卡爾更擔心兒子由於無人照顧，必須進養育院，而雷娜特以為海因切應該由外公領養。她把海因切領到伯特霍德家，跟他的女管家說，如果百萬富翁的外孫進了養育院，那伯特霍德先生一定會成為新聞界嘲諷的話柄。女管家沒了主意，只好收留了海因切。
伯特霍德恨卡爾，因此也不承認海因切是他的外孫。可是海因切的歌聲卻勾起了他對女兒的思念。他故意把錢包放在大門口，想暗中試探海因切，海因切卻把它還給了管家。海因切的誠實使伯特霍德滿心喜歡。從此，他不僅跟海因切一塊兒玩電動火車，還跟他一塊兒鍛煉身體，騎馬、跑步。伯特霍德從中享受到家庭的樂趣，他不再是個孤僻的怪老頭了。他要供海因切上大學，還要讓他繼承他的事業，可是仍然認為卡爾是個沒出息的罪犯，要求海因切必須忘掉他。海因切雖然已經跟外公建立了感情，但是他不能容忍任何人侮辱他的父親。祖孫兩人又鬧僵了。
一天，海因切正在花園里玩，無意中聽到花園外面汽車里兩個人的談話。原來偷那十二萬馬克的不是別人，正是銀行老闆恩格哈的兒子。小恩格哈不但偷了錢，還准備跟人合夥到法國尼斯去販賣假葯。海因切一聽到這些情況就趕緊去告訴外公，可伯特霍德卻不相信，海因切又去告訴卡爾，卡爾也以為不可信。海因切一心想查個水落石出，在得不到大人的幫助下，只好用母親留下的項鏈做抵押，借錢買了車票來到法國。當他到了尼斯，才得知小恩格哈一夥已去戛納。法國旅館的小聽差幫他趕到戛納，海因切在港口找到了小恩格哈和他們販運私貨的遊艇。他正想報告警察，可又不懂法語，他向一個會法語的人尋求幫助，誰知羊落虎口，原來那個人卻是小恩格哈的同夥，他被騙上了船，被這伙歹徒關在艙內。
這時，伯特霍德也已來到夏納，找尋海因切。由於聽卡爾說海因切曾提到過遊艇，伯特霍德報告了警察局，水上警察出海查找。海因切巧妙地弄斷了捆綁他雙手的繩子，沖出了艙房，奮力搖響了警報器。聽到警報的水上警察追了上來，壞蛋們終於落網。卡爾無罪釋放了。雷娜特和海因切來迎接他。伯特霍德這才認識到卡爾是個正直的人，他也來到監獄大門前，對卡爾表示無限的歉意。海因切又以嘹亮的歌聲，歌唱生活中新的一頁。[編輯本段]幕後/花絮：
