美國電影中的特殊現象──類型影片，在30年代獲得了充分的發展。最初的類型片是無聲電影時代的喜劇片、鬧劇片和西部片，到30年代初期，歌舞片、盜匪片、偵探片、恐怖片等類型相繼出現並得到繁榮發展。類型電影是美國經濟、社會和文化需要的直接產物，它們中成為經典作品的有歌舞片《四十二街》（1933）、《掘金女郎》（1933）、《大禮帽》（1935）、《風月無邊》（1936）和《齊格飛大歌舞》（1936）；盜匪片《小愷撒》（1931）、《公敵》（1931）、《疤面人》（1932）和《嚇呆了的森林》（1936）；恐怖片《吸血鬼》（1931）和《弗蘭肯斯坦》（1931）等。

『陸』 好萊塢八大影業公司的聯美電影

聯美是最早採用美國在60年代盛行的製片和發行方式的大公司。這種經營方式及導演具有的相對獨立性，使聯美公司得以在攝制娛樂片外，還拍攝、發行了一些具有一定影響和一定藝術成就的影片。如C.卓別林的《淘金記》（1925）、《摩登時代》（1936）、《大獨裁者》（1940）、《舞台生涯》（1952）、D.W.格里菲斯的《被摧殘的花朵》（1919）、《走向東方》（1920）以及《疤面人》（1932）、《桃色公寓》（1960）、《西區故事》（1961）等等。聯美公司在紐約成立時只是個小公司，20年代到30年代中，逐步發展成為美國電影業的8大公司之一。
50年代，美國電影業進入蕭條、衰退時期，卓別林和壁克黎先後把他們的股票出售給金融資本家。之後，聯美公司又幾度易手，終於在1981年被米高梅公司的老闆K.克科里安出資買下，並入米高梅公司，改稱米高梅—聯美娛樂公司。
