Earnest thriller-cum-weepie starring Russell Crowe as a maths genius whose life is wracked by schizophrenia. Stamped all over with 'Hollywood prestige project' and showered with awards

Russell Crowe gets the chance to act his heart out in Ron Howard's A Beautiful Mind. Not only does he portray a maths genius (based on real life Nobel Prize-winner John Forbes Nash Jr), he portrays a maths genius crippled by schizophrenia. And he ages 47 years! He turns in a chunky, twitchy performance which, though not on a par with his more subtle turn in The Insider, is admirable,He is complemented by a less flashy, underwritten turn from Jennifer Connelly.

Princeton, 1947. Awkward but arrogant John Nash arrives on a maths scholarship, determined to come up with an original idea. Not bothering with classes, he obsessively writes theorem (plotting the movements of pigeons, for example. His only friend is raffish roommate Charles (Bettany), a rich source of wisecracks - 「Officer, I saw the driver who hit me - his name was Johnny Walker」 - and moral support. Eventually Nash comes up with a revolutionary paper that wins him a position at MIT. It's here that his eccentricities give way to madness. Although he marries beautiful student Alicia (Connelly), the top-secret code-breaking work he is apparently doing for the government - represented by Ed Harris' mysterious agent - pushes him to breaking point. Full-blown paranoid schizophrenia erupts and Nash is hospitalised, his reality a mess of mania and imagination. Three decades of struggle ensue. Although the film leaves out the seedier elements of the real Nash's life (divorce, cottaging), it fashions a loose biopic that is by turns funny, exciting, sad and downright corny. The script, by Akiva Goldsman, (who also wrote the inexcusable Batman & Robin), is riddled with pithy, but occasionally clichéd, utterances that capture these shifting tones: there's Nash's description of himself: 「I'm quite well balanced - I have a chip on both shoulders」 - or the description his doctor, Rosen (Plummer), later uses to describes his disease to his wife: 「The nightmare of schizophrenia is not knowing what's true.」

Although it dallies with Cold War thriller elements, A Beautiful Mind is ultimately a formulaic tale of human perseverance, and merits comparisons with other, similar award-showered tales: notably Shine. As such, it's an above-average weepie, a Hollywood prestige film that pre-packages the sufferings of one highly intelligent man and the woman who loves him to manipulate the emotions. Although the film itself is not as smart as it imagines itself to be, it's certainly artful, with fine camera work by Roger Deakins (who shot the Coens' stylish The Man Who Wasn't There), and solid, thanks to Howard's even-tempered direction.

Verdict

A typical Oscars movie. Solid, middle-brow and worthy.

The story is based on the life of John Forbes Nash,Jr.,a mathematician and Nobel laureate who suffered from schizophrenia. The film gives us a unique first person perspective of the disease, drawing us into his world and allowing us to see what Nash sees.Howard's presentation is brilliant. At first Nash is presented as a bit eccentric, but lucid. As we experience his world, reality and illusion are so perfectly intertwined that we are not sure where the world ends and the mind begins.By fooling the audience Howard makes the subtle point that to the schizophrenic it all seems real.In attempting to evaluate Nash's world we get a distant understanding of the confusion that results when a rational person attempts to cope with a world that is part real and part hallucination.

While this is a biopic,it is more fiction than fact.A great deal of dramatic license is taken since Nash freely admits that he has little recollection of the years when he suffered from the disease. The powerful speech at the end of the film where he thanks his wife after receiving his Nobel Prize is pure Hollywood.Included in the DVD is footage of the actual Nobel ceremony and no speeches were given.Yet,we can forgive the latitude taken because the story is so inspirational.

From a proction standpoint, special note must be given to the makeup department, which ages Russell Crowe so magnificently. As the movie progresses through four decades,Nash is realistically depicted and aged appropriately.Likewise, the art department does a fine job rendering four different periods, matching costumes, props and sets to the times.

Yet,with all the fine proction values, this film excels most in the acting.Russell Crowe turns in a career performance in a career abundant in great performances. This character is the antithesis of the Russell Crowe we've come to expect.Instead of strong, tough and balanced, with a sharp worldly intelligence,he plays an eccentric and convoluted man with quirks, nervous habits and a psyche obviously out of balance.Crowe completely immerses himself in the enormous volume of the role, effortlessly moving between its elements from audacity to paranoia to tenderness to genius. This is an accomplishment that is light years beyond his Academy Award performance in `Gladiator',good as it was.

Jennifer Connelly puts herself on the map with an Oscar for best supporting actress. It is always difficult to avoid getting lost in the presence of an actor as powerful as Crowe, but Connelly stays right with him, delivering a moving performance as Nash's steadfast wife.

Ed Harris was my favorite to nose out Crowe for best actor in last year's Academy Awards.Harris gave a brilliant performance playing Jackson Pollock in `Pollock' (also featuring Jennifer Connelly in a small role) that was trampled under by the `Gladiator' Oscar juggernaut. As if to say,`If you can't beat him, join him',Harris goes toe to toe with Crowe in some of the most intense scenes in the film.Harris lends significant energy and intrigue to the movie with an urgent performance as the operative who recruits Nash to break codes for the government.

This film is nothing short of fantastic. It is expertly directed, superbly acted and meticulously crafted. It presents great drama while also bringing insight into a stigmatizing disease to a wide audience.

"Beautiful heart" is an extraordinary story, but its director is unique. Ron Howard did a great job in attracting the audience. He introced an excellent protagonist and let the audience experience the reality of mental illness.

This may be an incredible story that everyone can relate to, however, the director's mastery of Howard's exhibition always allows the audience to accompany Nash on his journey and be aware of his illness.

Anyone close to the weakness of human soul will appreciate how the film treats this subject with respect and honesty. Howard can describe all complex mental illness reactions while maintaining the patient's humanity and dignity. The film has a superb director, performed by Crowe and the actors, and has been a great success at every level.

"A Beautiful Mind" is an exceptional story, but it is only and exceptional film because of its director. Ron Howard does an amazing job of engaging his audience, introcing a brilliant main character, and making the audience experience the reality of mental illness. This could have been an unbelievable story to which very people could relate; however, the directorial mastery Howard exhibits throughout allows the audience to acpany Nash on his journey and awareness of his illness. Anyone who has been close to the frailties of the human mind will appreciate how respectfully and honestly this film approaches the subject. Howard is able to portray all the plex reactions to mental illness while maintaining the humanity and dignity of the patient. Superbly directed, wonderfully acted by Crowe and cast, this film succeeds on every level.

Beautiful Mind
A Beautiful Mind is a touching, emotionally charged film detailing the life of a brilliant academic who suffers from schizophrenia. This affliction slowly takes over his mind and we watch as his life crumbles apart around him. He abandons his students, alienates his colleagues and replaces his research with a fruitleand all-consuming obsession. Eventually he is taken into hospital where he is forced, with the help of electric-shock therapy and regular medication, to accept his condition and attempt to repair the shattered fragments of his life.
He succeeds. Of course he succeeds, this is Hollywood and Hollywood likes a happy ending. In this case the happy ending is that, as an old man and after years of struggle, the poor academic is awarded the Nobel Prize. One interesting point though; it's a true story and our hero is none other than John Forbes Nash Jr.
As a young man, John Nash was a mathematical genius. In 1947 he went to Princeton on a Carnegie Scholarship, and after three years had proced a 27-page dissertation for his doctorate in which he greatly expanded the field of Game Theory, transporting it from a position of relative obscurity into one of almost universal relevance.
In the 1920s the father of Game Theory, Hungarian mathematician John von Neumann, had shown that mathematical models could be used to explain the behaviour of players in si-mp-le games. His work was limited in scope however, and although interesting, it appeared to be of little practical use.
Nash's dissertation expanded on von Neumann's work, showing how Game Theory could explain complex as well as si-mp-le competitive behaviour. It wasn't a comprehensive solution to all game situations, but it did lay the foundations for the huge body of work on Game Theory which has been proced since.
Unfortunately, very little of this comes acroin A Beautiful Mind because the director (Ron Howard) seems more interested in ma-ki-ng a film about a schizophrenic than a mathematician suffering from schizophrenia. At the start of the film we are shown a Hollywood template of a typically obsessive young academic, introverted, socially inept, dismissive of his colleagues' work. If the notes we see Nash scribbling on his windows were chemical formulae or rhyming couplets rather than mathematical equations, the character would have seemed equally plausible.
This is not to say that Russell Crowe, who plays Nash, does a bad job. Indeed, he succeeds in giving his character a convincing plausibility rarely seen in mainstream cinema these days, and he was certainly a deserving Oscar nominee. It's just that we never see him doing any maths apart from the occasional scribbling on windows.
And when his great breakthrough finally comes, Nash is not poring over his books in the library or gazing fixedly at his glaequivalent of a blackboard, he's in a bar, eyeing up a group of attractive young women. How visually convenient.
But to be fair, this is a dramatisation based on Sylvia Nasar's best-selling book, not a documentary. Its aim is to entertain, not to enlighten, and it does this perfectly well. Russell Crowe proces probably his best performance to date and is equally convincing as both the awkward young genius and the tortured convalescent, struggling to rebuild his marriage and career. Jennifer Connolly (who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress) is excellent as Alicia, Nash's long-suffering wife, and there are several strong performances from the supporting cast, most notably Ed Harris as a mysterious character from the military and Paul Bettany as Nash's Princeton roommate.
But Hollywood requires more from its films than a few good performances; it requires drama,

Director Ron Howard has experience in playing with his audience's heartstrings.Remember in Apollo 13,when the fate of the astronauts was uncertain?(Ok,so if you remember your recent history, you knew.but still!) Or remember in Parenthood, when Steve Martin's kid was about to make the crucial catch?Ol Opie can still pluck those strings with the best of them.(And you know,he'll never stop being called Opie, even by those of us who never saw The Andy Griffith Show ring its initial run.) And plucking heartstrings is not a bad thing at all,not when you can do it in such a sincere, noncloying way as the masterful Beautiful Mind presents to its viewers.
John Nash is a mathematics prodigy who has a decided knack at solving previously unsolvable problems. He's socially dysfunctional, rarely looking anyone in the eye,but pours all of his energy - and soul - into procing one original idea,an idea that will distinguish him from all of the other mathemathical minds at Princeton University.
But John, like most who have had movies made about them, had his ups and downs. He meets and falls for a beautiful student of his named Alicia (Jennifer Connelly),and they proce a baby. But John also suffers from tremendous delusions and is diagnosed with a form of schizophrenia.Schizophrenia's a tough disease, folks - it's still not fully understood, and Nash was diagnosed with it in the middle of last century. He spends time in a sanitarium,as doctors struggle to find a cure.
Russell Crowe is absolutely powerful as the confused and confusing Nash.Although the marquee says "Russell Crowe",you'll immediately forget this is the hunky guy from Gladiator.I mean after all,he's playing some nerdy scientist de!But Crowe completely disappears in the role, and he's unforgettable.Actors kill for roles like this one, because it gives them a chance to show off their acting chops. For many actors, this is the kiss of death, because then they're exposed as poor thespians. But not for Crowe; if anything, this proves once and for all that he's a grand master of acting.I realize that sounds like overkill for him,but I think that when actors are labeled as a "hunk" - their skills as actors aren't seen as very substantial.Hey,looking darn good worked against Tom Selleck, and to a degree it has worked against Crowe as well.
And he ages well, too. The movie takes place over a fairly extended period of time, ending with Nash's acceptance of the Nobel Prize in 1994.The makeup on Nash is neither garish nor schmaltzy; he looks completely genuine. And that's the essence of Crowe's performance. It's sincere, never trying to win over the audience with a sly wink here or a toss of the hair there.Crowe shows remarkable poise, elegance, and is utterly astounding in the role.
His supporting cast is more than able.Jennifer Connelly is better than I thought she would be; in most roles, she's the eye candy. But this role had meat to it,and she held her own.It wasn't an easy role to play, and she pulled it off.And her scenes with Crowe do have that movie magic that each of us looks for when we go to movies, that one moment, that compatible chemistry that leaves audiences mesmerized.
And yes, this does have some very, very touching moments. The final scene, while predictable (even if you don't know the outcome in real life),will bring more than one tear to the eye.Yes,I'll admit it,it got me right here. But it's okay; I did that old 'guy-crying-in-movie-theater' trick. If you feel the brime falling from the lid,you make a motion toward your cheek and then you scratch vigorously; people might think you have a skin infection and move away slowly, but at least they won't think you're a girly man.
At any rate,it's certainly one of the best movies of the year.Everything's in place:the direction, the photography, and especially the acting.

Nominated for eight Academy Awards, and winner of four Oscars including Best Picture, A Beautiful Mind is one of the premier dramas of the decade. The brainchild of popular director Ron Howard (Opie from The Andy Griffith Show), A Beautiful Mind debuted to widespread critical acclaim e to the depth of its screenplay, the brilliant performances of Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly, and the in-depth portrayal of a victim of mental illness. Based on the true story of John Nash, a schizophrenic mathematical genius who overcame his illness and went on to win the prestigious Nobel Prize for his "Game Theory," A Beautiful Mind is one of the best films of the decade...

A young mathematical genius, John Nash (Russell Crowe) enjoys the early success of a budding career in academia. Able to complete mathematical formulas that baffle many of the greatest minds of his time, a young Nash stands on the brink of profound discovery with a limitless future and seemingly inevitable fame at his doorstep. Meeting a beautiful girl at an evening party, Alicia (Jennifer Connelly) would later become Nash's wife. The two seem destined for a life of bliss. But Nash's problems were not confined to the mathematical arena...

Suffering from schizophrenia, Nash develops an acute sense of paranoia, decoding encrypted non-existent Soviet spy messages from comic books and newspaper advertisements. The reality in which he lives does not exist, and it threatens to tear apart his marriage, his career, and the very life which he holds dear... Can Nash overcome his debilitating disease and pursue the course of excellence to which he once seemed destined? The cast and crew of A Beautiful Mind allow us to see a whole new world through the eyes of suffering genius...

Russell Crowe's follow up performance to smash hits LA Confidential and Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind is an unbelievable journey into one man's reality. Russell Crowe's brilliant portrayal of the schizophrenic Nash and Jennifer Connelly's standout performance as the woman who loved him form an onscreen synergy that continually drives the screenplay of A Beautiful Mind. Exhibiting quality direction from Ron Howard, the film stands as an eternal testament to the beauty of the human mind and the rability of the human spirit to overcome obstacles and shine at its brightest.

A fascinating film which successfully blurs the lines between John Nash's imagination and the world of reality, A Beautiful Mind vividly illustrates one man's struggle against great odds. As Nash's paranoia and hallucinations collude to blot out the genius of a beautiful mind, the power of the human spirit rallies to great heights - achieving a Nobel Prize and even the immortalization of one's own life in film! Nash should be lauded for his triumph against a paralyzing disease, and Ron Howard should be praised for delivering a cinematic masterpiece that shows us the true beauty of one man's plight. For these reasons and more, A Beautiful Mind is definite must-see film - perhaps one of the fifty best films of all time...

Director Ron Howard has created a moving masterpiece, elegantly guiding the audience through John Forbes Nash Jr.'s life starting with Nash as an intense, introverted youth striving for that perfect original idea and ending with Nash as a passionate, patient elderly man battling against his inner demons.

Through Howard's skilled hand and via Russell Crowe's amazingly understated yet incredibly touching performance, Nash's achievements and flaws are exposed without portraying mental illness in a clichéd cinematic form. Crowe's Nash is an honest, disturbing look at the price paid by people who suffer from schizophrenia and the toll it takes on families and friends.

"A Beautiful Mind" lays out the story of mathematical genius John Forbes Nash Jr. as he enters Princeton, a bright student with a limitless future ahead of him. Obsessed with finding a way to prove he truly matters, he competes with the other students in Princeton's brutally competitive math department, all of whom are searching for one truly original idea. Inspiration strikes him while he's studying in a local bar surrounded by his rowdy classmates. As they vie for the attention of a stunning blonde, Nash observes their rivalry and, from that, develops his 「game theory.」 Nash's theory contradicts 150 years of accepted theory and earns him a coveted position at MIT where part of his ty is to teach a course to eager young minds.

Jennifer Connelly enters the film as one of those eager young minds, Alicia Larde. Alicia falls for the nervous, socially inept Nash, inviting him to dinner and starting a romance that breathes life into Nash's carefully ordered world. As Nash's mental condition unveils itself, worsening with time, Alicia is the one true thing in his world that remains steadfast and dependable.

Russell Crowe exquisitely captures Nash's passion for his wife, his work, and his unending hunger for excellence. Jennifer Connelly again proves she's a talented actress capable of conquering characters with depth and emotion. The brilliant supporting cast, including Ed Harris, Paul Bettany, and Adam Goldberg, perfectly create the fuzzy environment where Nash roams. Over the course of little more than two hours, director Ron Howard and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman succeed in unfolding a beautiful story of love, despair, perseverance, compassion and pride the likes of which hasn't been seen on screen in many years.

"A Beautiful Mind" is easily one of the finest films of the year and deserves the Oscar buzz that surrounds it. The only real Oscar question is whether Crowe's winning last year will negate a nod this year or will the Academy reward what is clearly the best performance of the year with the golden statue it truly deserves.
