创作背景

片中很多灵感都取材于周星驰自己的真实经历。在构思拍《喜剧之王》时，周星驰与田启文谈起拍一些小人物的角色，因此戏中加入了很多周星驰早年工作和生活的点滴故事[13] 。片中尹天仇换上神父服装后就被杜娟儿一枪打死，但直到杜娟儿解决完所有坏人，尹天仇却还在后面演“内心戏”，急得导演直喊“cut”。这个片段取材自周星驰在《射雕英雄传》里跑龙套的经历。片中一只蟑螂蹦到尹天仇扮演的.死尸上，可他还是一动不动，这段戏源自于周星驰拍摄电影《九品芝麻官》时的真事。

选角过程

1998年，周星驰筹拍《喜剧之王》，并在香港第一次公开选星，林子善从1000个候选者当中脱颖而出，后来他在《喜剧之王》中扮演了洪爷这个角色。除了林子善在《喜剧之王》的招募活动中胜出外，周星驰还启用了张柏芝来担任该片的女主角。
